Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a specific massage, which uses techniques to work below superficial connective tissue with the aim of breaking up old structural patterns and allowing the free flow of nutrients and oxygen to the blood.  Some of the same massage techniques are used as in classic massage, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain.  It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and painful shoulders.

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually trigger points (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments.  These trigger points can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation.  Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these points to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles.

What is involved in a deep tissue massage treatment?

A consultation is required at your first treatment; this ensures deep tissue massage is right for you. Typically, a deep tissue massage is concentrated on specific painful areas.  The massage therapist used their thumbs, fingertips, knuckles, hands, elbows, and forearms during the deep tissue massage.  Unlike a relaxing massage, during a deep tissue massage the therapist requires feedback from the client.  You will be asked to breathe deeply as the massage therapist works on certain tense areas.

At certain points during the massage, most people find there is usually some discomfort and pain.  It is important to tell the massage therapist when things hurt and if any pain you experience is outside your comfort range.  There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. Every treatment is tailored to the recipient's needs and towels are used to ensure your modesty. Oils are used to help nourish the skin and allow a smooth continuous flowing movement.
